The Nigerian National Universities Commission (NUC) has ordered the country’s universities to close from 22 February to 14 March because of the general elections, which will be held on 25 February.
This is in response to calls by various individuals and organisations who have continued to express fears over the possible disenfranchisement of Nigerian students.
The NUC comes under the Federal Ministry of Education and was given the order by Education Minister Adamu Adamu, local media report.
Meanwhile, The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has scheduled the presidential and national assembly elections for 25 February, and governorship and states’ houses of assembly elections for 11th
The electoral body has insisted the elections would go ahead as scheduled. This is in spite of the cash and fuel scarcity.
