Malawi's ruling party cancels reruns of primary elections

Malawi’s ruling People’s Party (PP) has finally disclosed that there will be no reruns of primary elections in constituencies where the results were challenged by other contestants.Acting General Secretary for PP Paul Maulidi confirmed the development to ZBS saying the decision has been following the investigations the party has conducted.

PP was supposed to conduct a rerun in Mangochi west constituency on 25 January where Mary Kachiwundo challenged the results arguing Joyce Chikumba who emerged victor violated some rules and regulations of the Party’s elections but the rerun failed to take place.Answering on the postponement, Maulidi said the party has cancelled all the reruns and that the list of all parliamentary representatives of the party in the May 2014 tripartite elections will be out on Monday.

The party was also supposed to conduct reruns in Lilongwe City South East and Dowa East constituency.Meanwhile, all the contestants in the constituency in question have maintained that they will still contest in the May 20 elections either on PP ticket or as independent candidates.
