Nigeria: Group urges electoral body to conduct polls in displaced persons camps

An NGO, I-Nigerian Initiative, has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure that Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) exercised their voting rights in the forthcoming general elections.

The National Coordinator of the group, Miss Ada Apiafi, made the call after inspecting some IDPs camps in Abuja.

Apiafi reminded the electoral body about the millions of IDPs in some parts of the country and the need to factor them into the elections.

The coordinator lamented the plight of the persons, many whose families were scattered in various neighbouring countries.

She urged the relevant government agencies to be alive to their responsibilities to the distressed persons.

She said NEMA and INEC were in good position to work together and ensure that only registered IDPs who possessed the Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) were allowed to vote, especially since the camps were well regulated and peaceful.
