Ghana: Former first lady joins presidential race

Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings is expected to be acclaimed flagbearer of the National Democratic Party (NDP) as the party goes to Congress today, Saturday April 30.

Three thousand delegates will converge on the Trade Fair Centre in Accra to endorse her candidature as she goes unopposed.

The party, a breakaway faction of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), was formed in 2012. It will also elect national executives.

Speaking to Class News’ Alhaji Mohammed Frimpong, acting General Secretary of the NDP, said the process will be simple and straight forward.

“What is going to be on stage will be contests for national office positions, that is, from Chairman to General Secretary, Treasurer, Women’s Leader, Youth Leader, and Communications [Officer]. These are the main national office positions,” he stated.

“We are also going to elect our flagbearer. All other candidates who planned or intended to contest have told us they are stepping aside in deference to our leader to be the sole flagbearer, so, it is going to be an endorsement by the delegates. And the other national office positions have also been virtually endorsed so we’re going to have another endorsement of national officers.”

Mr Frimpong noted that a conference committee will meet after the conferences to deliberate on the party’s constitution.

“It is going to be a very straightforward and a simple ceremony. We are expecting around 3000 delegates in all and after that there [will be] conference committees to do a few deliberations about our constitutional review. We are going to find out if there are any proposals for our constitutional review,” he added.
